Flexibility is a winner

- Jaguar Land Rover awards supplier prize to Leoni
- Hand in hand in the areas of production, logistics and development

Nuremberg/Kitzingen – Leoni, a global provider of energy and data management solutions in the automotive sector and other industries, announces receipt of Automotive Supplier Excellence Award from UK carmaker Jaguar Land Rover. The award honors the flexibility and reliability of the supplier, who provides the manufacturer’s various models with cable harnesses and other components for the wiring system. The two companies have maintained a longtime partnership during which technologies for future generations of vehicles are now also being developed, such as new electrical and electronic architectures.

The automotive industry is currently undergoing a transformation that demands significant flexibility across the entire supply chain. Every year, Jaguar Land Rover therefore picks 15 companies from its pool of over 3,500 suppliers who have made significant achievements in supporting this transition and who best represent the ‘customer first’ principles at Jaguar Land Rover. Now, German supplier Leoni was one of these top 15. At the award ceremony, which took place in May 2019 at the manufacturer’s UK headquarters in the West Midlands, Jaguar Land Rover’s Director of Global Purchasing Ian Harnett commented: “Leoni is managing the change in our sector with a great deal of flexibility and professionalism.”

A long-standing supplier relationship

Even the legendary first-generation Land Rovers, produced from 1948 onwards, were equipped with a cable harness from Lucas Rists – a supplier later acquired by Leoni. Today, wiring systems and other Leoni solutions for energy and data management can now be found in five different models of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. The sites that manufacture these parts include Cairo in Egypt, Malošište in Serbia, and Arad in Romania. Leoni’s UK headquarters are in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where a cross-functional team handles the Jaguar Land Rover key account. One of the most innovative solutions now in production includes an aluminum bus bar, which translates into weight savings of around 1.5 kg per vehicle.

The cooperation between Jaguar Land Rover and Leoni extends well beyond production and logistics. Jaguar Land Rover has handed responsibility for developing some of the systems and components used in its latest vehicles to its supplier. In the future, Leoni will move even further up the value chain, and work with Jaguar Land Rover in the design phases of new electrical/electronic architectures for new vehicle generations. “We are proud to have been invited to contribute our know-how at early stages in the development cycle and so help our customer achieve success with innovative solutions,” comments Helmut Zehnder, Executive Vice President, Business Unit British Automotive Customers at Leoni.
